With talk of Generative AI dominating earnings calls, conference panel discussions, boardrooms across the country, it might be surprising to find out that a relatively small number of companies have actually rolled out Gen AI programs beyond the pilot stage.

EY research has found that while many companies have implemented Gen AI initiatives, 62% of those companies reassessed those programs in the past 12 months and only 7% completed deployment. It doesn’t mean that Gen AI is not living up to its promise, but it could be that companies are still trying to find the right fits for the transformative technology.

Matthew Burton, partner and EMEIA supply chain and operations leader at EY, joined the Talking Supply Chain podcast to talk about Gen AI and why it may not be reaching the breakthrough everyone expected just yet.

Burton said there is plenty of interest in Gen AI, but companies are struggling with getting the right data and getting good data. There are also privacy and other security concerns that must be addressed.

In the EY survey, 38% of respondents cited data quality as a top challenge, and another 33% said access to data was a challenge. Burton said that is not surprising, as data is often siloed in different departments and systems across organizations leading to “potentially incomplete data.”

Hear more from Burton on Gen AI, including why so many companies still think Gen AI will reinvent the supply chain.
